On November 9, 2024 over ten thousand people gathered in the city center of Valencia to protest against the local authorities. Calling for the accountability of the Valencian President Carlos Mazón, after his government failed to alert the public of the dangers of the incoming floods within an appropriate time. This was one of the region’s biggest protests in its history, and turned violent in its later hours, as police pushed back against the crowds that were pushing towards the government buildings.
Over 200 people died in the late October floods that barraged south-eastern Spain. Many were still missing at the time of the protest, and the government’s choice to send “only 8,000” of the military to aid in the recovery and rebuilding efforts was in question as well.
